Professional association modernizes member platform after legacy Drupal deprecation
The Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) — the voice of academic ophthalmology for 60 years — replaced a failing legacy Drupal site with a Cloverleaf Enterprise platform, delivering a modern member experience across multiple program areas with authenticated access for more than 800 members.
The challenge
AUPO had been running on a legacy Drupal site that was reaching end-of-life. Core modules were deprecated, and the integrations connecting the site to AUPO's association management system were breaking with increasing frequency. Members, including department chairs, program directors, research directors, and administrators at ophthalmology programs across the U.S. and Canada, were reporting access failures and a dated experience that didn't reflect the organization's standing in academic medicine.
The site needed to support a complex content landscape: an annual meeting with registration, abstracts, and educational programming; multiple leadership development programs including ALDP, INTREPID, WPO, and SCOR; a peer-reviewed journal; career opportunities; awards; member governance pages; and authenticated access to private resources like compensation surveys, data requests, and mailing lists. Members were clear: they wanted a modern platform that wouldn't require another ground-up rebuild in three years.
The approach
Cloverleaf deployed Enterprise-tier multi-site management to support AUPO's primary site alongside related organizational properties. The platform was configured with structured content types mapped to AUPO's programs, publications, events, governance structure, and member services.
Authenticated member areas were built with Single Sign-On and multi-factor authentication, giving more than 800 members secure access to private resources like research toolkits, survey data, fellowship compliance materials, and member-only content, without managing separate credentials. Integration with AUPO's AMS was rebuilt on the Cloverleaf platform, replacing the fragile legacy connections that had been the source of ongoing incident reports.
The results
Stable infrastructure and rebuilt AMS integration eliminated the recurring access failures members had been experiencing.
SSO and MFA-protected member areas serving department chairs, program directors, research directors, and administrators.
Replaced fragile legacy Drupal connections with reliable platform-native AMS integration, eliminating recurring access failures.
